This scheme is run on behalf of the Family Housing Group who are social landlords with 10,000 properties throughout London and was set up following a policy decision that in situations where tenants are in dispute, mediation should be the first resort rather than the blunt instrument of an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO’s).
Essentially problems arise because of ‘people living on top of each other’ in densely populated urban areas. The Family Housing Group policy revolves around tenants not only having social rights to quiet enjoyment etc. but social responsibility to try to get along with their neighbours and be tolerant.
Who is the scheme for?
The scheme provides a method of resolution between neighbouring tenants.
What does it cost?
The tenants do not pay anything towards the cost of the mediation. The Family Housing Group meets the total cost of £600 + VAT for the mediation.
How long does the mediation last?
The mediations are time-limited to three hours.
Where do the mediations take place?
The majority of cases will take place at a Family Housing Group office. Occasionally it is necessary to use a neutral venue – any cost implication must be authorised by the Family Housing Group.
