Baria Ahmed - Consultant

Baria previously headed up CEDR Solve, CEDR's Dispute Resolution Services arm. Together with managing the EDRS team and overseeing a leading panel of international commercial mediators, she was regularly engaged in advising on ADR generally, process design and is particularly strong in dealing with complex, multi-party and cross-border/international cases.

Baria was admitted as a barrister in the UK in 2002 as a member of the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn, London. She went on to practice as in house advocate in the litigation department of a busy West End firm, specialising in Employment, Media, Commercial Property and Company Law.

Accredited as a mediator in 2004, Baria is now a member of the CEDR Solve commercial mediator panel and her mediation practice reflects her legal background; she handles disputes across the legal spectrum including contractual, finance & property disputes.

Baria is often involved in CEDR's international development and consultancy work. She project managed, from tender to delivery, a 15-month consultancy project in Pakistan financed by the World Bank/International Finance Corporation. The largest such consultancy project for CEDR to date, Baria was central in the building of contracts and working with individuals at the highest level of the Judiciary, Government, Legal Profession and Industry in Pakistan.

She has since been involved in a number of international projects, including India, Turkey and Morocco and travels regularly within and beyond Europe. She has recently hosted senior delegations from Vietnam and India, and received them in London as well as travelling with them to Europe. In 2009, she will be part of a project team delivering consultancy services in Bangladesh, as well as helping develop further international opportunities, particularly in the Middle East.

Baria regularly delivers seminars to law firms and corporate clients on mediation practice in the UK and its interface with the civil justice system, negotiation skills and representing clients in mediation. She has contributed to as well as written herself a number of articles focussing on Alternative Dispute Resolution and spoken at Conferences, both in the UK and internationally, including the Law Society Ethnic Minority Lawyers Conference, Law 2008, the Commercial Lawyers Association and the British Turkish Lawyers Association.

A visiting lecturer at Westminster University in London, Baria developed and continues to deliver the undergraduate LLB Negotiation & ADR module. She has also contributed to the LLM programmes both in ADR and Negotiation and delivered seminars for Birkbeck College & SOAS University.

Born in Pakistan, Baria speaks fluent Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi as well as rudimentary French.
