Eileen Carroll - Deputy Chief Executive

Eileen Carroll is the Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Director of Strategic Development and one of the world's most experienced and successful commercial mediators. She is accredited by CEDR and a number of US institutions. Eileen was recently appointed as the Vice-Chair of the International Mediation Institute's Independent Standards Commission.

Eileen has a distinguished record in international dispute resolution both as a lawyer and a mediator. She co-founded CEDR in 1990, and is known as one of the top mediators in Europe, receiving an award for her pioneering work from the New York based CPR Institute of Dispute Resolution. Her career began in international chemical and industrial consultancy, working in the US, and moving to Law in 1981 she became a partner in a major London firm in 1987 where she served on the management committee and acted as an international strategy partner. In over 20 years of practice she has worked with multinational corporations in Europe, the Far East, India and the United States in a wide range of areas, including engineering, insurance and reinsurance, shipping, aviation, copyright, IT, libel, acquisitions and a range of negligence and other commercial claims. She spent 10 years working intensively with an American client, spending time with a US Firm in San Francisco.

Her first experience as a leading mediator dates back to 1988. Since then she has been involved in a wide range of important disputes both domestic and international. In 1998 she spent over 700 hours facilitating and broking two of the largest disputes in the English Legal System, one of which was the collapse of Atlantic Computers, the other the collapse of the Maxwell Empire. She is respected for her confidence and strength and has impressed parties with her "judicial use of toughness" to help parties bridge that last gap while maintaining their trust.

Eileen is a member of various international panels including the Council of Distinguished Advisors of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University, California, and the CPR mediator panel in New York.

Eileen has been invited to give addresses and speak at many international events, including Fordham University, Harvard Business School, OECD, World Bank and has made guest appearances on various national radio programmes, such as BBC Radio 4. She is the author of many articles on ADR and has spoken on numerous platforms in Europe and North America.

Recent publications include International Mediation - the art of business diplomacy [Carroll, Eileen & Mackie, Karl; 2nd edition (2006) Tottel Publishing] and she contributed chapters to Butterworths Mediators on Mediation [Newmark, Chris & Monaghan, Anthony (2005) Tottel Publishing].

Her distinctions include being the first European to receive the New York based CPR Institute of Dispute Resolution Award for excellence in alternative dispute resolution, 1997. She received an Entrepreneurial Award from European Union of Women 2005 in recognition of outstanding contribution to pan-European understanding and progress that provides inspiration to others and was a Finalist for the European Women of Achievement Award, 2005

Eileen has recently been featured in Elizabeth Cruickshank's book entitledWomen in the Law which is a collection of interviews of twenty-eight women solicitors, barristers and judges, each recognised as outstanding in her profession. Women in the Law is available to purchase from The Law Society of England and Wales.
