CEDR announces two new training courses

Influencing skills for mediators - Tuesday 21 October 2008
Influencing skills for mediators, however facilitative, undoubtedly have to exert their influence over parties. Influencing is a key element of the tool kit for both mediators and negotiators. This course will introduce strategies and techniques to increase the participants’ proficiency in these vital skills. In addition there will be opportunities to practice these skills in the safe role-play environment. Influencing is an area which triggers ethical debates for many mediators, so the day will also include a debate designed to shed light on “the limits of legitimate mediator influence?"

Mind games in mediation: psychology in the commercial case - Tuesday 17 March 2009
The core of the commercial mediation may superficially be about balancing the commercial and legal elements of an entrenched dispute. However, the mediator who ignores the psycho-personal elements of the mediation process does so at a cost to the process, the possibility of achieving the best possible outcome and often at their own personal cost. As mediator you may be asked to deal with extremely difficult and emotional situations and with traumatised and vulnerable individuals. This course looks at tools for ensuring that mediators allow themselves to do their own psychological 'house-keeping' and also some tools for dealing with situations where parties are psychologically challenged in some way.

CEDR Exchange forum - Wednesday 10 September 2008
Mediator Speed 'Dating' - meeting, mingling, informing

This special Exchange forum gives participants the chance to have the conversations they have always wanted, with large numbers of mediators, in a special speed dating format. All attendees will be able to have a number of one-to-one conversations with other Exchange participants.

Many may want to choose their own subjects to discuss but we have come up with four questions which we think might make an interesting topics for the 'speed dates':

1) Why did you become a mediator?

2) What is the best way to work with lawyers in a mediation?

3) What classifies as a good result for a client in a mediation?

4) When is and when isn't mediation good value for money?

As with most speed dating events there will be score cards for participants to say who they would like to chat to again in more depth. Unlike other speed dating evenings delegates will be asked to complete a form to detail what they have learned from speaking to so many other mediators on these topics.

Please come along for an Exchange Forum like no other!
