Hostage negotiation and mediation - Thursday 27 September 2007

The idea of negotiating with hostage takers immediately conjures up images of testosterone fuelled Hollywood movies. Needless to say the reality requires a huge amount of skill and patience - qualities which mediators are often required to display in ample proportions. So what can mediators learn from the world of the hostage negotiator?

  • The most important qualities of a good hostage negotiator.
  • The dynamics of a hostage negotiation.
  • The learning points for specific situations in mediation.

The former Director of Scotland Yard's National Negotiation Course has agreed to spend a day talking with a select group of CEDR mediators.

Aim
To understand some of the dynamics of working in hostage negotiation and look at the skills which might be relevant to commercial mediation practice.

Objectives

  • Learn about the scope of activities involved in hostage negotiation
  • Role play a hostage negotiation scenario
  • Explore the practical effects of hostage negotiation dynamics.
