The CEDR Certificate in Advanced Negotiation

CEDR has delivered the world’s leading mediator training course for almost two decades.  Using our expertise as training providers we have developed the Certificate programme to the same exacting high standards and introduced a unique new negotiation learning format. Our courses are highly interactive, involving extensive participation through demonstrations, role plays, individual and group feedback and coaching.  We also use exercises, video and film clips to illustrate particular aspects. Relevant background reading material is also provided to be used as both pre and post course reference material.

A unique feature of the course is that every module will also include a special ‘negotiation clinic’ at which participants are encouraged to bring problems and experience from their own practise to receiving coaching and feedback.

Learning style

The course centres on reflective learning. As a reflective learner, you will think about how you’ll use your new knowledge and skills in your future activities – the learning is always linked to action, and theory to practice. Donald Schön, author of ‘The reflective practitioner: how professionals think in action’, suggests that the capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continuous learning was one of the defining characteristics of professional practice.

When you do this as part of learning you are also able to understand better how theory can be applied in practice.  Taking yourself through a reflective process can help inform what worked or didn't work, what you might need to do differently if you did it again or how you might develop your own behaviour or practice.

As part of this learning, you will be encouraged to keep a journal throughout the course to encourage reflection between Modules.

Teaching Methods

The trainers will employ a variety of methods across the course, and will encourage a significant amount of interaction with other delegates.  Such methods include:

  • Negotiation Clinic: private 1:1 sessions with faculty members to reflect on your learning and discuss your progress as a reflective negotiator
  • Group exercises completed in pairs or groups of other delegates
  • Plenary sessions including group discussion
  • Role playing
  • Dedicated web portal on the CEDR Website, allowing delegates to access course materials, recommended reading and contact other delegates.

Assignments

Each delegate will be required to complete 4 assignments throughout the course.

  • Pre Course Assignment: Prepare a summary of a real life negotiation scenario, to bring to the course.
  • Module 1 Assignment: Analysis of a real life negotiation, using the concepts learnt during the first module
  • Module 2 Assignment: Further analysis of a negotiation using concepts learnt in Module 2, plus notes on how you have experimented with techniques learnt so far.
  • Post Course Assignment: Synthesising your knowledge to reflect on your learning, and examining how you may go on to further embed your knowledge after the course.
