CEDR's next Masterclass
Questioning in mediation
Gerry O’Sullivan, Irish author and certified professional in mediator training, will be the speaker at our second masterclass, ‘Questioning in Mediation’. The key focus of this masterclass series is to discuss the importance of negotiators, mediators and those interested in the use of conflict resolution to deepen dialogue in our society and lessening adversarialism.
James South, Managing Director at CEDR, describes O’Sullivan’s book ‘The Mediator’s Toolkit: Formulating and Asking Questions for Successful Outcomes’, as a “clear conceptual framework” for mediators and those professionals dealing with conflict and disputes..
“One of the most important skills sets of a mediator, and indeed any professional, is asking good questions to achieve a successful outcome. During my 24 years of mediating, I have always felt there has been insufficient attention given to the role of effective use of questions, as part of the mediator’s toolkit. Indeed, in my experience, most mediator training and texts only pay cursory attention to this skill-set. So, when I read Gerry O’Sullivan’s book ‘The Mediator’s Toolkit: Formulating and Asking Questions for Successful Outcomes’ I was delighted that finally there was a book that skilfully and clearly fills this gap.
It provides mediators and all professionals dealing with conflict a clear conceptual framework to structure their questioning and clearly sets out the theoretical and psychological underpinnings to these techniques. It also, in some detail, gives practical examples of how these questions may be used in mediation or to manage conflict. While clearly written with mediators in mind, it is an invaluable resource to all those looking to resolve conflict.
Given the excellent insights into this key skill of Questioning, CEDR is delighted that Gerry will be talking at the next CEDR Talk events on 26 September at 5-7pm. The first hour I will be interviewing her on key aspects of her book and applying them to her mediation practice. The second hour will be a practical session will Gerry will lead participants through her S-Question Model.”
