Michael Bartlet is a course convenor and senior teaching fellow in ADR at SOAS (University of London) where he also teaches Public Law. He is a board member of Mediation Hertfordshire and has trained as a civil, family and community mediator. Michael has extensive experience of face to face and telephone mediation, the majority of which have settled successfully. His determination and optimism enables him to find constructive solutions to intractable disputes by encouraging parties to think outside the box. This type of mediation acumen is uniquely adapted to resolving cross-cultural disputes. Michael was a Trustee of the National Refugee Council (2005 to 2012) and has been a chair of the Asylum Rights Campaign (2003-2006). He has recently participated in a Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School’s Executive Education’s Advanced Mediation Workshop on Mediating Complex Disputes.
Michael Bartlet studied English Literature at Balliol, Oxford before taking a Postgraduate Diploma of Law at City University. He was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) 1992 and completed pupillages at Cloisters and 4 Brick Court. He has an LLM with a speciality in Public Law and Human Rights from UCL. He worked in public affairs in the voluntary sector, advising and representing Quakers in their relations with Parliament and government. He was seconded to the transition Commission on Equality and Human Rights to advise on the development of cross-strand work on equality and was a lead negotiator in creating the right to celebrate same sex marriages in religious premises in England and Wales. He has experience of teaching in schools, colleges and universities and for the British Council in Ecuador. He coached the SOAS team for the International Bar Association negotiation and mediation competition in Vienna, coaching the winning contestant for 2018.
