Terry Renouf

Commercial Mediator, Conciliator & Solicitor

Short Introduction

Litigation is on no-one’s “bucket list”: it places demands on business and commerce and on the lives of those involved. It is adversarial by design and amplifies differences between the parties. As a mediator I work with the clients to bring the dispute back from the "legal" to the real world, to find solutions that mean that the dispute which focuses on the past can be resolved enabling the clients to focus on the challenges of tomorrow.

Testimonials

"Thank you for your calm and persuasive manner being firm at the right time when it was needed. I did not think we were going to get there in the end but somehow you managed to unlock the key to a satisfactory settlement. Both parties can now move on with their lives."

Advisor (non-legal) for party

"Terry acted as a mediator for our client. He was helpful, calm and friendly. He identified the key points on which the parties were able to make progress and assisted them to reach a settlement on the day."

Solicitor for party

"Once again I can’t thank you enough for your sympathy and sympathetic way in which you have dealt with the matter. It was refreshing for me to talk about to someone neutral."

About Work

I have now been mediating since 2017 and have undertaken well over 100 formal civil/commercial mediations (whether online or in person). In addition to this I have acted as conciliator in more than 100 consumer disputes. My mediation clients range from unrepresented parties, small businesses, property owners and developers, builders and their sub-contractors, landlords, tenants, service companies, utility companies, accountants, solicitors, surveyors, the NHS and its constituent Trusts, local government bodies, family disputes, banks and other lending institutions and in one instance the operators of a golf course. The type of clients and the substance of their disputes are as varied as their lives and their businesses. Many have legal representation, sometimes through direct access to the Bar, more often through solicitors but clients are also frequently representing themselves without legal support. None want to be involved in the stress, complexity and costs of litigation. My style is personable and flexible. I focus on the clients and their needs and aspirations. I will ask pertinent questions and offer observations about the challenges and risks of litigation based on my 30+ years of experience as a solicitor in private practice. I am happy to discuss offers and how they may be received. I will suggest options to break the impasse of "final offers". I never forget that the choice of whether to settle rests with the client. My role is to give the parties the opportunity to make that choice.
