Lead Faculty, Negotiation, Hostage, Trainer

Short Introduction

Since leaving the Police Service, I have devoted my professional life to mediation and the training of others in the response and management of crisis and conflict. The context has often been negotiation skills, or more generically, helping people have better conversations but in extremis, equipping co-workers to help a suicidal colleague. It is particularly rewarding to create dynamic simulations that mimic hostage-taking or extortion scenarios and use these as a basis to train a range of negotiation skills.

About Work

My first training role was to instruct police recruits, thereafter, training has been a constant theme of my professional life. Over many years, I have taught commercial mediators, hostage negotiators, pilots and flying instructors. Whether it be core skills to a tentative aspiring pilot, crisis management processes to diplomats or the coaching of a C-suite Director unsure if she can make the next career move, helping others to maximise their potential, is my raison d’être. All the training I design or deliver is highly practical, often dynamic and always immersive. No single aspect of my training or coaching work is more rewarding than any other, some may sound more exclusive than others, but in every case two things are true. Firstly, it is invariably the case that delegates find all or at least aspects of the experience more challenging than they had foreseen and so the sense of triumph and delight when they succeed is wonderful to be around. Secondly, whether the simulation be a commercial contract dispute or a cyber extortion by an organized crime group, the skills trained and used are skills for life. My colleagues and I are regularly contacted post-training with an account of how a delegate had used a technique that we have talked about, and how something intractable has shifted in their professional or personal life. It is the satisfaction of knowing that whatever the programme, the skills we teach are skills for life.
