Kelly Stricklin-Coutinho
Coach, Assessor
Short Introduction
It is very rewarding to train the next generation of mediators in what has become an essential skill for those working in dispute resolution. Undertaking mediation training was a significant moment in my professional development, that represented both the challenge of learning a skill very different to my day job, and the joy of discovering a better way of working. I particularly enjoy coaching new skills, and then seeing what progress participants make with their newfound abilities.
About Work
I am a mediator and barrister by profession, and Chair of the Civil Mediation Council. In addition, I have trained and taught alongside nearly every stage of my career.
For many years I convened my own courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in specialist legal areas (LLB and LLM), as well as teaching seminars at first year undergraduate level. I initially taught contract law at Birkbeck, and then developed a tax module on the LLB for Birbeck, which I delivered. I then convened the EU Tax Law module on the LLM at King's College London for several years, which was part of the Tax Law LLM and the EU Law LLM.
Convening modules involved creating the syllabus for the course and managing all aspects of it, including student support, setting and marking final examinations, moderating and dealing with matters arising such as plagiarism, as well as supervising dissertations. I've also delivered guest lectures on professional level summer schools and at university level internationally.
In addition to professional courses at university level, I have also delivered professional training, including training professionals in advocacy in the UK for assessment for rights of audience, and internationally, for litigation and arbitration.
It is a special pleasure to see what students or course participants go on to do after their training.
