Mediator Skills Training Advanced Mediation Skills Workshop

For experienced mediators ready to move beyond the foundations. CEDR's Advanced Mediation Skills Workshop is a two-day, practice-led intensive designed for MST and IAP alumni who are operating in increasingly complex disputes and want to sharpen the strategic judgement, timing, and intervention precision that separates advanced practitioners from competent ones.

Eligibility: Successfully completed CEDR’s Mediator Skills Training or equivalent mediation training ideally more than two years ago (at least one or two years) and have been practising as a mediator since.

Programme Overview

Built for practitioners who have earned the foundations and are ready for what comes next

Most mediation training teaches you to get through a mediation. This programme teaches you to operate within one at the highest level, where disputes are multi-party, interests are layered, emotions run high, and the difference between resolution and deadlock comes down to a single well-timed intervention.

What you will leave with:

By the end of the programme, you will have more than new techniques. You will have a sharper sense of how you think and intervene under pressure, and clearer command of the strategic choices that determine outcomes in complex disputes.

1. Stronger Strategic Judgement

A more refined ability to read complex disputes and make decisions with confidence, even when information is incomplete and stakes are high.

2. Greater Precision in Intervention

Improved timing and precision in mediator interventions, knowing exactly when to speak, shift, or hold back to influence the trajectory of a negotiation.

3. Advanced Negotiation Capability

Enhanced ability to analyse and influence negotiation dynamics across complex, multi-party, and emotionally charged environments.

4. Confidence in High-Conflict Settings

Greater composure and effectiveness when managing entrenched parties, power imbalances, and disputes where emotion is a dominant force.

5. Refined Professional Identity

A clearer sense of your own mediation style, strengths, and areas for continued development as an advanced practitioner.

6. A Network of Experienced Peers

Connections with a carefully selected cohort of practitioners at the same stage of their careers, relationships that last beyond the programme itself.

What you can expect:

CEDR's Advanced Mediation Skills Workshop is a progressive, practice-led development programme for experienced mediators and MST alumni who have been applying their skills in real disputes and are ready to elevate their practice. The focus is not on revisiting foundations. It is on deepening the strategic capabilities that matter most when complexity increases and standard approaches are no longer sufficient.

Across two intensive days, participants engage in complex role-play simulations, receive expert structured feedback, and work alongside a carefully selected cohort of peers. The small group format, capped at 12 participants, ensures every participant receives meaningful individual attention and high-quality interaction with faculty throughout.

The programme culminates in an evening networking event on Day 1, featuring a fireside conversation with senior practitioners on the realities of advanced mediation practice.

Who should attend this training?

This programme is not for everyone, and that is by design. It is built for experienced mediators who have moved past the foundations and are ready to tackle the most demanding professional development work available.

  • MST and IAP Alumni
Graduates of CEDR's Mediator Skills Training or International Accreditation Programme who completed their training at least one to two years ago and have been applying mediation skills in practice. You are confident in core frameworks and looking to deepen capability, not revisit basics.
  • Professionals Facing Increasing Complexity
Mediators now working in larger, multi-party, or more deeply contested disputes than their original training prepared them for, who need advanced strategic tools to respond with confidence and precision.
  • Practitioners Committed to Reflective Development
Those who understand that advanced practice is not just about technique, it is about developing the self-awareness, professional identity, and reflective rigour that separates good mediators from exceptional ones.

What is the trainer to participant ratio?

We maintain exceptional coaching ratios to ensure personalised attention:

Maximum 12 participants total, working in groups of 6 with dedicated faculty members. This intimate group size ensures:

  • Extensive individual coaching and feedback
  • Opportunity to mediate multiple times across both days
  • Deep exploration of your specific development areas
  • Meaningful peer learning from accomplished fellow mediators
  • Ability to ask detailed questions and receive expert guidance

Our expert faculty rotate between groups, providing diverse perspectives and coaching approaches throughout the two days.

Is there an assessment?

This is a professional development workshop, not an assessment programme. There's no pass/fail - every participant receives a certificate of completion.

The focus is entirely on skill development, practical learning, and receiving personalised coaching to strengthen your mediation practice.

Workshop Programme

Each day is structured around complex role-play simulations grounded in real commercial and employment dispute scenarios. Teaching input, live demonstration, and structured feedback alternate throughout, ensuring skills are developed through active practice rather than passive instruction.

1

Day 1: Strategic Foundations and Complex Case Practice | 09:30-18:00

Day 1 opens with expert teaching input on advanced strategic frameworks before moving into intensive case simulation. Participants engage in complex multi-party scenarios that test strategic judgement, intervention timing, and process design under pressure. Faculty coaching is woven throughout the day, with structured group feedback between simulations.

  • Advanced strategic frameworks for complex and multi-issue disputes

  • Complex role-play case study: commercial or employment dispute simulation

  • Adaptive process design in live mediation environments

  • Managing power imbalance, group dynamics, and positional entrenchment

  • Structured group feedback and individual practitioner coaching

  • Advanced bargaining strategy and negotiation leverage in practice

Evening: Networking event with fireside chat | 6:00PM onwards
Join fellow participants and faculty for an intimate networking evening. Enjoy a fireside chat with experienced CEDR mediators discussing advanced mediation practice, an opportunity to connect informally with peers and faculty and explore the frontiers of high-level practice.

2

Day 2: High-Stakes Simulation and Advanced Technique Refinement | 08:30-16:00

Day 2 builds directly on the previous day's work, moving into more demanding simulation scenarios with heightened complexity. Teaching input focuses on the advanced techniques most relevant to the disputes and challenges that emerged during Day 1, ensuring the programme responds dynamically to participant experience and practice gaps.

  • Teaching input: breaking deadlock, reality testing, and risk-based decision support

  • Advanced role-play case study: multi-party or multi-stakeholder dispute simulation

  • Mediator influence, timing and precision of intervention at critical moments

  • Managing high-conflict dynamics: bias, emotion, and entrenched positions

  • Individual practitioner coaching and targeted feedback sessions

  • Reflective practice: professional identity and advanced practice development

Practitioners, not lecturers.

Every member of CEDR's advanced faculty maintains an active professional mediation practice. They are not teaching from case studies or retrospective theory, they are sharing the judgements and techniques they applied last week, in disputes every bit as complex as the ones your cohort will simulate during the programme.

With over 50 expert practitioners across 20 countries, CEDR's faculty represents the most experienced body of mediation trainers globally. For the Advanced Workshop, faculty are selected specifically for their experience at the complex end of mediation practice.

Your Progress After CEDR's Training

The programme is built around the capabilities that determine whether an experienced mediator becomes an exceptional one. These are not beginner skills revisited, they are advanced competencies developed through live practice, expert coaching, and structured peer learning.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

Who is this programme designed for?

The Advanced Mediation Skills Workshop is designed for MST and IAP alumni, and experienced mediators trained with other recognised providers, who completed their mediation training at least one to two years ago and have since applied those skills in practice. It is intended for practitioners now working in increasingly complex disputes - commercial, employment, or organisational - who are ready to operate at an advanced level and want to deepen strategic capability, not revisit foundational skills.

Do I need to be a CEDR MST graduate to attend?

No. The programme is open to practitioners who trained with CEDR or with other recognised mediation training providers, provided they meet the eligibility criteria: completion of a recognised mediation programme at least one to two years prior, combined with meaningful practical experience applying those skills. If you are unsure whether your background is a suitable fit, please contact the training team at training@cedr.com who can advise you directly.

What is covered in the curriculum?

The curriculum focuses on strategic judgement in complex and multi-issue disputes, advanced negotiation and bargaining analysis, adaptive process design in live mediation environments, managing entrenched conflict and high-emotion dynamics, multi-party and multi-stakeholder negotiation strategy, mediator influence and precision of intervention, advanced reality testing and risk-based decision support, and breaking deadlock in sophisticated negotiations. All content is delivered through complex role-play simulations, expert teaching input, and structured coaching and feedback.

How many participants attend each cohort?

Each cohort is capped at 12 participants. This deliberate limitation ensures participants receive meaningful individual coaching, high-quality structured feedback, and genuine depth of interaction with expert faculty and peers throughout the two days. Places sell quickly, early booking is strongly recommended.

What is the cost and what is included?

The investment is £1,995 (plus VAT for UK customers) per participant. Included in the fee are all training materials and advanced case study packs, full faculty coaching throughout both days, the evening networking event on Day 1, lunch and refreshments on both days, and a CEDR Certificate of Advanced Professional Development. Deposit arrangements and group booking enquiries can be discussed with the training team at training@cedr.com.

Is there networking included in the programme?

Yes. The evening of Day 1 includes a dedicated networking event featuring a fireside conversation with senior practitioners. This session provides an informal setting to connect with peers and faculty, share practice experiences, and discuss the frontiers of advanced mediation. Attendance is included in the programme fee and strongly encouraged as an integral part of the experience.

Does the programme count towards CPD requirements?

Yes. The programme counts towards CEDR MyCEDR CPD requirements and a Certificate of Advanced Professional Development will be issued upon completion. The programme is also eligible for recognition under most professional CPD schemes. If you need to confirm recognition with a specific professional body, please contact the training team at training@cedr.com who can provide supporting documentation.

What format is the training delivered in?

The Advanced Mediation Skills Workshop is delivered in-person only, at CEDR's London offices at 100 St. Paul's Churchyard, EC4M 8BU. Day 1 runs from 9:30am to 6:00pm, followed by an evening networking event. Day 2 runs from 8:30am to 4:00pm. The in-person format is essential to the depth and quality of the role-play simulations and coaching that the programme delivers.

Do I pay VAT if I'm an international participant?

Do I need to pay VAT on my course booking?

This depends on where you are based. UK participants are charged VAT at the standard rate of 20% on all course fees.

If you are based outside the UK, different rules apply depending on your location.

I'm based in the EU - do I pay UK VAT?

If you are an EU-based business or person purchasing a course in a professional capacity (e.g to use the skills within your role or for future employment), UK VAT is not charged. Instead, you will be responsible for accounting for VAT in your own country under the reverse charge mechanism. This means you self-report the VAT liability to your local tax authority rather than paying it to us. You should confirm your obligations with your local tax adviser or finance team before booking.

If you are an EU-based individual (i.e. not purchasing on behalf of a VAT-registered business, or for you to use in a professional capacity for your role or future employment), different rules may apply and we recommend checking with your local tax authority.

I'm based outside the UK and EU - do I pay VAT?

Participants based outside the UK and EU are generally not subject to UK VAT on course fees. However, you may have obligations under your own country's tax rules for imported services. We recommend checking with a local tax adviser to understand any reporting requirements that may apply to you.

How do I ensure my booking reflects the correct VAT treatment?

When booking, please ensure you provide your country of residence or your business's country of registration. EU business customers should also provide their valid VAT registration number or Tax Certificate so we can apply the reverse charge correctly. If you are unsure how to proceed, please contact us at training@cedr.com before completing your booking.

Will I receive a VAT invoice?

Yes. All participants receive an invoice upon booking. For UK participants this will include VAT at 20%. For international participants, the invoice will reflect the applicable treatment for your location.
