Charlotte Steinfeld

Mediator

Short Introduction

Mediation: collaboration in conflict. Gaining trust, vocalising needs and mutual self-interest through effective negotiation and problem-solving. I find the most satisfying part of a mediation is when both parties believe they have "won". It is a privilege to be appointed mediator because mediation and the principled negotiation that underpins it is enormously empowering to parties and their advisors. Parties take ultimate control of their dispute and their legal advisors showcase their strategic negotiation skills for a most effective outcome.

About Work

I am a CEDR accredited commercial mediator and registered member of the Civil Mediation Council, with expertise across a range of civil and commercial disputes, particularly in contentious trusts, wills and probate. I am also a qualified barrister practicing in the areas of civil, chancery and commercial law from 10 King’s Bench Walk (“10KBW”), Inner Temple, where I am currently Deputy Head of chambers and head of the 10KBW Mediation Group. I further enjoy advising and representing parties in mediation as a “mediation advocate”. I hold a certificate in Advanced Mediation Advocacy from the Standing Conference of Mediation Advocates (SCMA) and am a founder member of its inaugural panel.

I am one of, if not the the only, civil/commercial mediator in the UK who has completed executive education in negotiation skills at the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation with Professor Bruce Paton, co-author of leading negotiation text: Getting to Yes, Negotiating an Agreement Without Giving In. I use the Harvard framework of principled negotiation to help parties and their representatives prepare for and strategically resolve their dispute/s at mediation, whether appointed as mediator or whether representing a party. My mediation style is assertively facilitative: assisting parties hold a rigorous yet respectful negotiation, coaching them to maximise gain and helping to ensure that a workable agreement is made in the parties’ mutual self-interest. I am skilled at ensuring parties feel understood and (where a two-party dispute) that they have both "won" at mediation.
