In this CPD Masterclass, we welcome renowned American sociologist, Dr. Milton J Bennett, to discuss ‘The developmental journey to a meta experience of the third culture‘.

Dr Milton J Bennett has long been described as “a significant and influential intellectual leader in the field of intercultural communications” and in this session he brings his insight to our world of the mediator as a conflict manager, trying not only to create change in a day but importantly to help parties to find a lasting resolution.

Dr Bennett creates and conducts programmes for corporations, universities, and other organisations in the U.S., Asia, and Europe on topics of global leadership and the development of intercultural sensitivity. Dr Bennett is well-known for his Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), which is used internationally to guide intercultural training design and to assess intercultural competence.

He is the executive director of the Intercultural Development Research Institute (IDR Institute), co-located in Washington State, USA and Milan, Italy, which sponsors constructivist research, seminars, and consulting in intercultural communication. He is a founding fellow of the International Academy of Intercultural Research and an active member of the Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research Europa. Dr Bennett co-founded The Intercultural Communication Institute (ICI), which from 1986-2018 conducted the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication. He is currently an adjunct professor of intercultural communication in the department of sociology, University of Milano Bicocca in Italy.

This masterclass will include:

  • Identifying when relationships we observe or experience are dysfunctional due to cultural and/or identity conflicts.
  • Looking at addressing these differences in a conflict with a strategic versus a tactical approach
  • Exploring Dr Milton Bennett’s Developmental Model of Cultural Sensitivity and how it relates to the world around us.
  • Discussing the integration of these ideas (metacognition) in the context of mediation to reflect on how it may help us in our own work.
