Programme Outcomes

Refresh and strengthen your mediation skills through intensive practice with real-world commercial and employment case studies. This isn't theory - it's two full days of hands-on role-play exercises, targeted skill development, and expert coaching designed to elevate your practice.

What you'll gain:

  • Master commercial and employment mediations

Practice handling complete case studies across two critical mediation contexts, from opening through to settlement, with expert coaching throughout.

  • Refine your core mediation competencies
Receive targeted training refreshers on negotiation coaching, process design, working actively with the phases of mediation, and managing group dynamics and bias.

  • Get personalised expert feedback
Work in small groups (maximum 6 participants per group) ensuring extensive individual coaching from CEDR's most experienced practitioners.

  • Strengthen your professional network
Connect with fellow MST alumni, share practical experiences, and learn from peers who face similar challenges in their mediation practice.

  • Reignite your confidence
Leave with renewed confidence, fresh perspectives, and practical techniques you can apply immediately in your next mediation.

  • Enjoy exclusive networking
Join an intimate evening networking event with fireside chat on Day 1, creating meaningful connections with fellow mediators and faculty.

What you can expect:

Hands-on role-play exercises covering commercial and employment case studies
You'll spend both days mediating complete case studies from opening through to settlement. This isn't observation - you'll be in the mediator's chair, making decisions, managing parties, and navigating the complete mediation process.

Targeted training refreshers on key negotiation and mediation topics
Integrated throughout your practice sessions, expert faculty provide focused training refreshers on:

  • Negotiation coaching techniques
  • Strategic process design
  • Working actively with the phases of mediation
  • Managing group dynamics and bias
  • Adapting your intervention style based on real-time party dynamics

These refreshers address challenges as they arise during your mediations, making the learning immediately practical and applicable.

Who should attend this training?

This programme is designed for two distinct groups:

  • Aspiring and practising mediators
Whether you wish to mediate internally within your organisation or start a practice as a mediator, CEDR's training gives you the skills and processes to deliver mediation services. Focussing on civil and commercial cases, we teach you how to mediate a dispute from start to finish with a comprehensive, flexible framework to navigate even the most challenging conflicts.
  • Professionals seeking an expanded conflict engagement skillset
Increasingly, professionals are becoming CEDR-accredited mediators to meet interpersonal and conflict engagement challenges within their current roles. These skills are in demand as workplaces become more susceptible to conflict, and the business environment grows increasingly complex with numerous stakeholder relationships to navigate.

What is the trainer to participant ratio?

We maintain exceptional coaching ratios to ensure personalised attention:

Maximum 12 participants total, working in groups of 6 with dedicated faculty members. This intimate group size ensures:

  • Extensive individual coaching and feedback
  • Opportunity to mediate multiple times across both days
  • Deep exploration of your specific development areas
  • Meaningful peer learning from accomplished fellow mediators
  • Ability to ask detailed questions and receive expert guidance

Our expert faculty rotate between groups, providing diverse perspectives and coaching approaches throughout the two days.

Is there an assessment?

This is a professional development workshop, not an assessment programme. There's no pass/fail - every participant receives a certificate of completion.

The focus is entirely on skill development, practical learning, and receiving personalised coaching to strengthen your mediation practice.

Workshop Programme

Intensive training that embeds skills permanently

1

Day 1: Commercial Case Study | 08:30-18:00

Morning: Commercial case study introduction
Receive your commercial dispute brief and begin mediating a sophisticated multi-party commercial case. Expert faculty observe and provide real-time coaching as you navigate the opening phases, manage party dynamics, and begin exploring interests and positions.

Afternoon: Advanced commercial mediation practice
Continue mediating your commercial case through negotiation and settlement phases. Targeted training refreshers address key challenges as they arise: negotiation coaching techniques, strategic process design, working actively with the phases of mediation, and managing complex group dynamics.

Evening: Networking event with fireside chat | 6:00PM onwards
Join fellow participants and faculty for an intimate networking evening. Enjoy a fireside chat with experienced CEDR mediators discussing practical insights, war stories from complex mediations, and lessons learned from years of practice. Build meaningful connections with your peer group in a relaxed setting.

2

Day 2: Employment Case Study | 08:30-18:00

Morning: Employment case study practice
Tackle a challenging employment and workplace dispute case study. Apply your mediation skills to the distinct dynamics of workplace conflicts, managing emotional tensions, power imbalances, and ongoing relationships that characterise employment mediations.

Afternoon: Final practice and coaching debrief
Complete your employment mediation with intensive coaching on your specific development areas. Targeted refreshers address managing bias, handling difficult conversations, delivering challenging feedback, and adapting your intervention style based on party responses. Close with group debrief and key takeaways for your ongoing practice.

Your Progress After CEDR's Training

Trainers

Sharpened Active Listening & Negotiation Skills

Listen with greater precision and impact
Intensive practice with commercial and employment cases strengthens your ability to uncover hidden motivations, recognise unstated concerns, and adapt your listening approach based on party dynamics and emotional states. You'll leave with refined questioning techniques that extract critical information even when parties are guarded.

Facilitate negotiations with renewed confidence
Through mediating complete case studies under expert coaching, you'll strengthen your ability to manage competing interests, create value in disputes, handle sophisticated parties and advisers, and maintain momentum toward settlement even when negotiations stall.

Enhanced Capability in Difficult Conversations & Emotion Management

Navigate challenging moments more effectively
Hands-on practice with emotionally-charged employment cases develops your ability to deliver unwelcome messages, provide constructive reality testing, and challenge assumptions without triggering defensiveness. Expert coaching helps you refine these crucial interventions.

Manage high-conflict dynamics with composure
Working through complex commercial and workplace disputes under faculty observation strengthens your techniques for de-escalating tension, supporting parties through intense reactions, and maintaining your own effectiveness when mediations become stressful or confrontational.

Strategic Process Management & Style Flexibility

Diagnose and shift stuck mediations
Develop stronger capability to recognise exactly where a mediation has stalled, understand why momentum stopped, and make strategic interventions that shift parties back toward productive negotiation. Learn to work actively with the phases of mediation rather than rigidly following a formulaic process.

Adapt your approach with tactical awareness
Expert coaching helps you recognise your default intervention patterns, understand when they serve you well and when they limit effectiveness, and develop greater tactical flexibility to adapt based on real-time assessment of what each mediation needs at each moment.

Open Course vs Bespoke – What’s the Right Fit for You?

Not all conflict challenges require the same solution. At CEDR, we help organisations and individuals choose the most effective path, whether that's building internal skills through training or addressing systemic issues through strategic training.

This section outlines how both approaches work and when each is most effective.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

Do I need to be CEDR-accredited to attend?

This workshop is designed exclusively for MST or IAP alumni. If you completed your CEDR Mediator Skills Training or International Accreditation Programme within the last 2 years, you're eligible to attend.

How soon after my MST can I attend the refresher?

We recommend waiting at least 1 year after your original MST to gain maximum value from the refresher. This allows time to mediate some cases, encounter practical challenges, and identify specific development areas the refresher can address.

What's included in the workshop fee?

£1,795 + VAT includes all training materials, two full days of expert coaching and intensive practice, refreshments and lunch both days, evening networking event with fireside chat on Day 1, and your certificate of completion.

Can I pay a deposit to reserve my place?

Yes, please contact our training team to arrange this on +44 (0)207 536 6000 or email us here . Please read our terms and conditions for all payment information.

Why are spaces limited to 12 participants?

Small group size (maximum 6 per group) ensures extensive individual coaching, opportunity to mediate multiple times, and meaningful peer learning. This intimate format maximises engagement, practice time, and personalised feedback from expert faculty.

What should I prepare before attending?

No specific preparation required—just bring yourself ready to engage fully in intensive practice. You'll receive case study materials at the workshop. Come prepared to mediate, receive coaching, and learn from expert faculty and accomplished peers.

Is this workshop suitable if I haven't mediated many cases yet?

Absolutely. Whether you've conducted numerous mediations or only a few, the intensive practice and expert coaching will strengthen your capabilities. The workshop is designed for MST alumni at various stages of their mediation journey.

Do I pay VAT if I'm an international participant?

Do I need to pay VAT on my course booking?

This depends on where you are based. UK participants are charged VAT at the standard rate of 20% on all course fees.

If you are based outside the UK, different rules apply depending on your location.

I'm based in the EU - do I pay UK VAT?

If you are an EU-based business or person purchasing a course in a professional capacity (e.g to use the skills within your role or for future employment), UK VAT is not charged. Instead, you will be responsible for accounting for VAT in your own country under the reverse charge mechanism. This means you self-report the VAT liability to your local tax authority rather than paying it to us. You should confirm your obligations with your local tax adviser or finance team before booking.

If you are an EU-based individual (i.e. not purchasing on behalf of a VAT-registered business, or for you to use in a professional capacity for your role or future employment), different rules may apply and we recommend checking with your local tax authority.

I'm based outside the UK and EU - do I pay VAT?

Participants based outside the UK and EU are generally not subject to UK VAT on course fees. However, you may have obligations under your own country's tax rules for imported services. We recommend checking with a local tax adviser to understand any reporting requirements that may apply to you.

How do I ensure my booking reflects the correct VAT treatment?

When booking, please ensure you provide your country of residence or your business's country of registration. EU business customers should also provide their valid VAT registration number or Tax Certificate so we can apply the reverse charge correctly. If you are unsure how to proceed, please contact us at training@cedr.com before completing your booking.

Will I receive a VAT invoice?

Yes. All participants receive an invoice upon booking. For UK participants this will include VAT at 20%. For international participants, the invoice will reflect the applicable treatment for your location.
