Ian Weatherburn

Mediator, Construction Adjudicator

Short Introduction

I am passionate about helping people and businesses overcome differences that hinder progress and create unnecessary stress to individuals.  Mediation gives all those involved the opportunity to move on, refocus on their lives and their businesses, and regain a sense of freedom.  Having benefited from mediation in business personally I bring empathy and insight and I take great satisfaction in helping parties reach agreement and feel the genuine relief that resolution brings.

Testimonials

“Having been practising for many years, Ian clearly understands and executes the need to get close to the detail in his analysis of the issues in dispute, but also to have a wider commercial understanding of the bigger picture. He also handles his interactions with many different types of people with empathy and understanding, and conducts himself professionally at all times.” - Solicitor and party representative
“…. I just wanted to thank you for your sterling efforts in dealing with our case right up until the very late ending. Sorry for that. I nevertheless felt that your handling of the mediation was exemplary.” - Party and Chartered Building Surveyor

About Work

Having built my career in construction and engineering delivery, working on site, at board and level stage in between, and in more recent years focusing primarily on dispute resolution at home and abroad and as both mediator and adjudicator, I bring a detailed, practical understanding of the industry, its commercial realities and the disputes that all too often arise.

My experience includes disputes over workmanship, time and value, and those between private homeowners and contractors, as well as high value commercial disputes involving employers, main contractors and subcontractors. I also have experience of wider business disputes, including banking, insurance, business valuation, shareholder matters and the sharing of development value.

My approach is predominantly facilitative, with a strong focus on helping parties reach workable, durable outcomes. However, as a Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Construction Manager, I am able where appropriate to draw on informed industry knowledge, educated opinion and an evaluative perspective grounded in significant hands on industry experience. This allows me to give parties the right level of encouragement and challenge at the right time. When discussions become intense or prolonged, I also recognise the value of an appropriate degree of levity to help maintain engagement, reset perspective and support constructive progress.
