Short Introduction
I have been a trainer for more than 40 years. I train on the topics that I work with: mediation, conflict management and negotiation skills. I like to think I walk the talk. I sometimes think I should have been a teacher because I enjoy preparing training materials and delivering them to learners. I am most proud of the mediator skills training materials I have co-created for Conflict Dynamics in South Africa, for the International Labour Organisation and for CEDR.
About Work
All my jobs have had a training component. I was thrown into the deep end of training in the early 1980s, training managers and union representatives in volatile unionised environments in South Africa.
After being trained as a mediator in 1989, I soon found myself training labour-management mediators in South Africa and for the International Labour Organisation. My work in South Africa was acknowledged in 2012 when I was awarded the CEDR Mediator Trainer of the Year Award.
I was accredited as a mediator by CEDR in 2003 and soon joined its Faculty of trainers. I am now Head of the CEDR Faculty of Mediator Trainers. I train extensively for CEDR. This involves mediator skills training, conflict management and negotiation skills training.
One of the wonderful spin-offs of training is that I am often appointed as a mediator or as a coach by people whom I have trained. My coaching work typically involves coaching negotiators as they prepare for negotiation and lead negotiations, and coaching mediators struggling with challenging aspects of mediation.
