Lead Faculty, Trainer

Short Introduction

I have over 30 years of experience in complex commercial disputes within international business with a particular focus on Maritime, Aviation, Defence, Technology, Cyber, Engineering/Infrastructure, Energy, Oil & Gas and Investor-State dispute resolution. I served as international GC to Northrop Grumman Corporation and prior to this at Litton Industries Inc. My experience in ADR stems from both being a user and in being a neutral. I have been involved in disputes internationally and have a good understanding for cultural perspectives.

About Work

Through my experience and background I have has covered all facets of dispute management. This has included developing adjudication systems, ADR guidelines, model ADR clauses, ADR policies and procedures, and Global conflict compliance. I have also worked to develop appropriate process design mechanisms for highly complex disputes including state-to-state, investor-state, and commercial matters. I have broad energy dispute resolution experience in both downstream, upstream, and renewable energy such as solar and wind projects, and have been involved in energy exploration and transit disputes. I was Counsel for Western Atlas involved in its oil and gas exploration and drilling activity globally. I have also worked extensively with The Energy Charter Treaty Organisation in relation to energy transit matters and sit on the ECT panel for transit disputes. This experience has shown me how important it is for business to resolve disputes at an early stage to avoid the cost, time and destruction of relationships that litigation often brings with it. Mediation is an excellent tool for this purpose. I have experienced the most intractable disputes being resolved through the assistance of a trained neutral. No dispute is incapable of being transformed through mediation. It is this experience that led me to come onto CEDR Faculty. The opportunity to share my mediation experience and enthusiasm is something I relish. To educate stakeholders who have an interest in learning about the process and how it can be used in their own business and personal environments is what makes Faculty a special place.

Key Skills

I have always been a good listener, taking in what my business clients explain to me about a dispute. Hearing what they have to say and exploring with them what they feel is the essence of the issue is something I have developed further through my mediation career.

I am a problem solver by nature and enjoy working with the Parties to help them articulate and enhance their potential paths toward resolution.
