Programme Overview

Your skills transfer. The process is what changes.

As mediators, we often find ourselves operating within a familiar domain: commercial disputes, family matters, community conflicts, employment cases. The tendency to stay within those lanes is natural. But the mediation skills you have developed are far more transferable than the narrow framing of any single sector suggests.

The mediation skills we use are similar across contexts. The difference lies in the way we approach the process.

Workplace mediation operates within a distinct organisational context. The relationships are ongoing. The dynamics are shaped by hierarchy, team structure, and organisational culture. The conflict may involve individuals, teams, or wider systemic issues. Navigating these realities with confidence requires a specific understanding of how workplace mediation works and how it differs from the mediation settings you already know.

CEDR believes our society needs more skilled workplace mediators. This one-day certification programme is designed to give you that contextual knowledge, equip you with the process tools specific to workplace settings, and give you the confidence to begin offering your services to a sector where your expertise is genuinely needed.

Who should attend this training?

This course is designed for mediators who are already qualified and practising but who have not yet worked in workplace settings, or who lack the process confidence to offer their services in this sector. • Community mediation
  • Family mediation
  • Employment mediation

Felicity Steadman

Felicity has been a trainer for more than 40 years, working exclusively on subjects she practises herself: mediation, conflict management, and negotiation.

Her career began in volatile unionised environments in South Africa in the early 1980s. After training as a mediator in 1989, she trained labour management mediators across South Africa and for the International Labour Organisation.

Accredited by CEDR in 2003 and now Head of the CEDR Faculty of Mediator Trainers, she was awarded CEDR Mediator Trainer of the Year in 2012. She maintains an active practice as a mediator and negotiation coach.

Arabella Tresilian Profile Photo

Arabella Tresilian

Arabella brings over two decades of experience as a trainer, facilitator, and educator across education, health, social care, and governance.

Accredited as a CEDR mediator in 2017, she specialises in training that combines professional rigour with a compassionate, inclusive approach — drawing on trauma-informed practice and a deep commitment to neurodiversity-aware learning.

She has trained thousands of individuals across the UK and internationally, from senior leaders and HR teams to frontline staff, and her community training work during the Covid-19 pandemic, reaching over 3,000 people across 140 sessions, was recognised with a Bath Life Award for People Services.

Open Course vs Bespoke – What’s the Right Fit for You?

Not all conflict challenges require the same solution. At CEDR, we help organisations and individuals choose the most effective path, whether that's building internal skills through training or addressing systemic issues through strategic training.

This section outlines how both approaches work and when each is most effective.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

Prior mediation training and practice experience are required to attend.

Do I need CEDR Accreditation to attend?

No. CEDR Accreditation is not a prerequisite. The course is open to any accredited mediator who has previously trained and practised, regardless of which organisation issued their accreditation. If you are unsure whether your background qualifies, the training team can advise you before you book at training@cedr.com.

How many CPD hours does the course provide?

The course provides 8 hours of CPD recognised by the Civil Mediation Council. A CEDR Certificate of Training is also issued upon completion, which you can add to your professional mediator CV and profile.

Can I pay a deposit to reserve my place?

Yes, please contact our training team to arrange this on +44 (0)207 536 6000 or email us here. Please read our terms and conditions for all payment information.

Why is workplace mediation different from other mediation fields?

The core mediation skills are largely transferable across contexts, active listening, managing emotions, negotiation, and facilitating dialogue are universal. What changes in a workplace setting is the process approach: the relationships are ongoing, the disputes are embedded in organisational structure and culture, and the context of a continuing working relationship must shape how you design and manage the process. This course gives you the specific process knowledge and contextual understanding to navigate those differences with confidence.

What will I be able to do after completing the course?

Following the course, you will understand the different ways conflict manifests in organisations, the circumstances in which workplace mediation is appropriate, the typical steps in the workplace mediation process, how to use private and joint meetings strategically in a workplace context, how to manage team and multi-party disputes, and how to market your services to organisations and HR professionals as a workplace mediator.

Do I pay VAT if I'm an international participant?

Do I need to pay VAT on my course booking?

This depends on where you are based. UK participants are charged VAT at the standard rate of 20% on all course fees.

If you are based outside the UK, different rules apply depending on your location.

I'm based in the EU - do I pay UK VAT?

If you are an EU-based business or person purchasing a course in a professional capacity (e.g to use the skills within your role or for future employment), UK VAT is not charged. Instead, you will be responsible for accounting for VAT in your own country under the reverse charge mechanism. This means you self-report the VAT liability to your local tax authority rather than paying it to us. You should confirm your obligations with your local tax adviser or finance team before booking.

If you are an EU-based individual (i.e. not purchasing on behalf of a VAT-registered business, or for you to use in a professional capacity for your role or future employment), different rules may apply and we recommend checking with your local tax authority.

I'm based outside the UK and EU - do I pay VAT?

Participants based outside the UK and EU are generally not subject to UK VAT on course fees. However, you may have obligations under your own country's tax rules for imported services. We recommend checking with a local tax adviser to understand any reporting requirements that may apply to you.

How do I ensure my booking reflects the correct VAT treatment?

When booking, please ensure you provide your country of residence or your business's country of registration. EU business customers should also provide their valid VAT registration number or Tax Certificate so we can apply the reverse charge correctly. If you are unsure how to proceed, please contact us at training@cedr.com before completing your booking.

Will I receive a VAT invoice?

Yes. All participants receive an invoice upon booking. For UK participants this will include VAT at 20%. For international participants, the invoice will reflect the applicable treatment for your location.
