Stephen Bate has mediated a wide range of disputes since accreditation with claim values up to £80 million. His mediation experience covers a broad range of civil disputes and he is recommended by the Legal 500 for his work as a leading mediator.
In addition to his mediation work with CEDR Stephen is a member of the Civil and Commercial Panel of mediators of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is accredited by the International Mediation Institute.
Professional Background
Stephen is a practising barrister with over 25 years’ experience in a wide range of civil and commercial disputes across many business sectors. Past work has included contractual disputes in a very wide range of markets, including ICT contracts, franchise agreements, employment agreements, insurance claims, guarantee claims and construction claims to name but a few; also a wide variety of tort claims, including nuisance, claims for competition damages and professional negligence against solicitors; and property-related matters including landlord and tenant disputes (residential and commercial), boundary, right of way and conveyancing disputes. Past barrister work has included partnership matters and advice to health trusts and other statutory bodies (particularly in the entertainment sphere) on their statutory rights and obligations. Stephen’s past barrister work has also included probate and trust matters.
Stephen is particularly well regarded for his work on law related to media, telecommunications, entertainment and sports. He has advised/acted for broadcasters, record companies and their trade associations, song writers, performers, publishers, film producers and distributors; on contractual, intellectual property, regulatory and other legal matters. He has acted in sponsorship and other sports-related contractual and intellectual property matters. He has also acted in defamation and privacy cases.
