With the improvement of civil justice processes, being a pre-requisite for countries to join the EU, CEDR has partnered with a number of international funding organisations to introduce mediation to assit countries wishing to accede. Assistance typically involves research and analysis of existing judicial systems, design of court mediation pilot schemes, mediator training programmes and awareness raising programmes.

Over the past 20 years, CEDR has trained mediators in 20 European countries and in addition to country specific activity, has been involved in a number of pan-European initiatives including :

  • 2009 - CEDR spoke at the European Commission's European Day of Justice Conference
  • Since 2009 CEDR has been assisting the Ministry of Justice with plans for secondary legislation to comply with the EU Mediation Directive
  • Since 2007 - CEDR has acted as the UK co-ordinator for GEMME, the european group for judges engaged in mediation.
  • 2007 and 2005 - sponsored the Chamonix meetings of managers of ADR centres.
  • 2005 - CEDR led the creation of a collaboration of four leading European providers together with one from the US, to offer wider access to international mediators.
  • 2005 - CEDR made representations to MEPs' consultation process on proposed EU directive on civil and commercial mediation.
  • In 2004 - CEDR, in conjunction with CMS Cameron McKenna published The Eu Mediation Atlas:Practice and Regulation, the first pan european map of mediation across the EU.
  • 2002 - Project Grotius EU review of ADR involving ministries of justice of all European countries.
  • 2002 - responded to EU Green Paper and was then invited, along with small number of stakeholders, to initial meeting to agree objectives and appointed to the drafting committee tasked with developing a European code of conduct for mediators.
